About the artist

Dan Raphael grew up on a hobby farm south of Duluth, Minnesota. His work as an artist began as an escape from the homogeneity of his youth, and expanded with travel and rich life experience. Raphael flourishes as a self-defined modern impressionist.

Raphael’s whimsical color palette is balanced by the depth of persona reflected in his figurative representations of male and female. His landscapes capture the feeling and texture of the moment, and reflect his innate appreciation for nature.

Since 1997, Raphael has primarily worked in large-scale oils and watercolor. As the author and illustrator of two books for children, François the Barber and A Gnome in my Home, however, he does not limit his creativity to a specific medium. As such, inspiration from artist and designer William Morris resulted in Raphael’s introduction to textiles with Patternalia in 2011.

"My artwork is a steady demonstration of my innate optimism. I am comfortable with that limited knowledge, enough to let it continue on its own purpose. I make contributions, but in the end the artwork does what it wishes." - Dan Raphael
